Embedded Software Engineer
C++ Software Engineer – C++17/20 | DDS | Real-Time Linux | Utrecht [€72K]
[MedTech / Robotics]
The first devices are with customers. So the software has stopped being a prototype and started being something that has to work in a hospital, every time, with nobody standing next to it.
My client is a MedTech scale-up in Utrecht, over 90 people, building an autonomous robotic device that performs a full diagnostic blood draw on its own. Near-infrared imaging, ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound feed a robotics and AI stack that finds the vein and takes the sample without a phlebotomist. The company has moved from development into first customer deployments, so the work now is reliability, structure and long-term maintainability of a complex hardware-driven system. You join a multidisciplinary development team and sit alongside hardware engineers, systems engineers and other software developers.
What you’ll do
You take ownership of software components inside the hardware-integrated system. That means designing and implementing in modern C++ (C++17/20), maintaining structured state-machine-based logic, and integrating hardware that is still changing into the existing stack. This is C++ running on a PC on the robot, not microcontroller firmware. Communication between subsystems runs over DDS, and a real part of the job is debugging across the software and hardware boundary, where the fault could sit on either side. You also drive improvements in the existing architecture, improve testability with automated verification and Python scripting, and optimise performance in Linux and real-time environments. Code review is taken seriously here, and technical decisions are made in system-level design discussions rather than handed down from above.
Your profile
• 4 to 7 years of professional C++ development experience
• Strong modern C++ (C++17/20) and proven work on production-level systems
• Experience structuring code for maintainability and scalability, plus automated testing
• Linux experience and strong debugging skills in complex systems
• Git and collaborative workflows
• State machines, hardware-software integration, DDS or a similar pub/sub framework, real-time systems and Python scripting are all a plus
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field
What’s in it for you
Up to €72K gross per year including pension. Hybrid working from the Utrecht office, 25 holiday days on a full-time contract, and an annual training budget of €2.000. Frequent team activities and a company weekend away once a year.
